The second International General Surgery Journal Club was a great success, thanks to the efforts of moderator Christian Jones MD (@jonessurgery) and 1st author Elliott Haut (@elliotthaut). A full transcript of the journal club is available on Storify: https://storify.com/igsjc/april-igsjc-transcript
This month we had 46 participants, 536 tweets (166 original tweets, 165 replies, and 205 retweets), with over 1/2 million impressions. Not too shabby for the second month of this project! @IGSJC now has 294 followers from all over the world, with Seattle being the top city at 6% of followers.
For our first International General Surgery Journal Club selection, we have partnered with JAMA Surgery to discuss the article Composite Measures for Profiling Hospitals on Bariatric Surgery Performance from the Michigan Bariatric Surgical Collaborative. First author Justin Dimick MD, MPH (@jdmick1) will be participating in the discussion, and Andrew Wright MD (@andrewswright) will be moderating.
The article is available online, and will be free to access for the entire month of March. The twitter-based journal club will begin Monday 3/3 and last through Wednesday 3/5. In order to participate in the discussion, use the hashtag #IGSJC in any tweets about the article or the journal club. To follow the discussion, search for the #IGSJC hashtag. You can use set up a method to follow the #IGSJC hashtag more easily using a a custom widget (go to the settings menu in Twitter to set one up), or though apps like TweetDeck.
Although the moderated discussion will only last 72 hours, you can discuss the article any time on twitter. The tweets will be archived on this blog, and we will announce a “Best Tweet” of the month. In the future we hope to offer prizes (beyond pride and bragging rights) to the author of the best tweet.
Welcome to the International General Surgery Journal Club!
Every month we will pick a new article of interest to the General Surgeon, typically just at the time of publication. We will hold a global journal club that will take place entirely online, using Twitter. The article will be announced in advance using the @igsjc twitter account. The discussion will take place over 72 hours- usually starting the 1st Monday of the month. Every month there will be a designated moderator who is an expert in the field. We will also be inviting the authors of the articles to participate. We are working with publishers to ensure that each article will be FREE to access for the entire month. Every month we will summarize the twitter discussion and archive the discussion to our blog.
In order to participate in the discussion follow the @igsjc account on twitter. Tag any tweets about the article with the hashtag #igsjc. To follow all of the discussion, set a search for #igsjc – this will show all of the tweets using that hashtag.
For advanced twitter users, consider using a widget or an app like TweetDeck that allows you to more easily save your searches.
